Our School

St. Joseph’s College was founded as a boarding school for boys in 1875, by the Marist Brothers, a Roman Catholic Teaching Order, which originated in France. Under the direction of the first Principal, Brother Alphonsus, the school opened with twelve pupils.

The College has a long history and tradition as part of Dumfries’ educational community. Many of the parents of today’s students also studied here and think so highly of it that they send their sons and daughters to us. Our staff uses a variety of teaching methods to make learning fun. We try hard to foster an academic environment in which children feel comfortable so that they can study most effectively.

Empowering Self-Belief: The St. Joseph's Way

Fostering Confidence, Resilience, and Success

At St. Joseph’s, we believe in the transformative power of self-belief. Our school is dedicated to nurturing the confidence, resilience, and determination of our students, empowering them to reach new heights of success. We understand that self-belief is not just a mindset; it’s a cornerstone for personal growth and achievement.

Through a dynamic and supportive learning environment, we strive to instill in our students the belief that they can overcome challenges, pursue their passions, and make a positive impact in the world. St. Joseph’s is not just a place of education; it’s a community where self-belief is cultivated, celebrated, and where every student is encouraged to dream big and soar higher.

At St. Joseph’s, we recognize that self-belief is a journey, and we are committed to walking that path alongside our students. With dedicated educators, a rich curriculum, and a supportive community, we aim to inspire and empower each individual to unlock their full potential. We invite you to explore all that St. Joseph’s has to offer and join us in fostering self-belief that will shape a brighter future for our students and society as a whole. Together, we can make dreams a reality, one confident step at a time.

Learning and Achievement

St Joseph’s College ensures that our students learn for life. Our teaching gives them the knowledge they need to prepare for their future.  We use a variety of additional study methods, offering a more inclusive form of teaching, to provide students with a better chance of success. This teaching approach is particularly designed to match the students’ different learning types.

Our study groups enable students to apply their learning in a practical way. The teacher’s role here is to provide inspiration and encourage the pupils to create their own study groups. Students can therefore determine the content and methodology in their study group.

The St Joseph's Difference

At our cherished Catholic school, we stand apart as a beacon of unity and inclusivity in the world of education. What sets us apart is our commitment to embracing the rich tapestry of cultures and backgrounds that grace our hallways. We are a vibrant community where diversity thrives, where students from various walks of life come together to learn, grow, and share their unique perspectives.

Our co-educational approach is a testament to our belief in the equal potential of every student, fostering an environment where young minds of all genders flourish side by side, learning not only from textbooks but also from one another. Our school is a sanctuary where faith and knowledge harmoniously coexist, nurturing not just academic excellence but also the values of compassion, tolerance, and respect.

In this extraordinary setting, our students are not only educated but are also inspired to become compassionate leaders who will make a meaningful impact on our global community.
